Paddling

Paddling in Antarctica

On most ships, Paddling refers to a one-time kayaking outing. This is an excellent option for guests who would like to experience kayaking in the polar regions but do not want to paddle multiple times or every day. It is also a great option for guests that do not have previous kayaking experience as paddling on most ships (but not all ships) are done in sit atop inflatable kayaks, which are more stable.

On the ships Greg Mortimer & Sylvia Earle, a full Paddling program is offered meaning you have the chance to paddle multiple times.

Experience Paddling in Antarctica

For travelers who want to experience kayaking in the Arctic or Antarctica without committing to a full multi-day program, paddling excursions offer the perfect introduction. These one-time guided outings allow guests to explore pristine polar waters, glide past ice formations, and take in breathtaking landscapes—all without the need for prior kayaking experience.

On most ships, paddling is done using sit-on-top inflatable kayaks, which provide enhanced stability, making them ideal for beginners or those looking for a more relaxed experience.

What to Expect From a Paddling Excursion

Unlike full kayaking programs, paddling excursions do not require previous kayaking experience, making them an excellent way to explore the polar regions from the water. Here’s what you can expect from your Antarctica Paddling trip:

A one-time guided kayaking outing, perfect for guests who want to paddle without committing to a full program

A stable, beginner-friendly experience, with many ships using sit-on-top inflatable kayaks for extra comfort and ease (availability varies by ship)

An immersive, engine-free adventure, offering the chance to take in the natural sounds of the ice, water, and wildlife.
